13-year-old Raouf* and his father Ahmed*, 38, are from a family of eight living in an area of southern of Afghanistan plagued by severe droughts. Ahmed*, who has been a labourer for half of his life, had not been able to cultivate crops for fifteen years due to water scarcity. And like many, Raouf* and his family were constantly on the move to find work elsewhere. Raouf* loves to study and wishes to be a doctor one day, but the water shortages meant his education was interrupted. With water drying up in the village, Raouf* had to spend several times a day fetching water in a reservoir away from home and missed out on his classes. The water, which he carried on his back, was consumed by both people and animals and the poor quality have caused many to become ill.
